The 5.1 mix is unbalanced: Ellington's score gets a huge fidelity bump, but everything else sounds mostly the same, and the score is too loud. As for the mono, the mix is much better, and Criterion haven't applied too much high-frequency noise reduction. Unfortunately, a high-pass filter was applied arbitrarily to the entire film, eliminating most low frequencies, presumably to reduce the distortion that is present at those frequencies.
Consequently, you can barely hear the bass in Duke Ellington's score, as well as numerous other sounds throughout the film. The 192 kbps mono track on the R1 Columbia DVD sounds MUCH better, with better lows and highs.
The R1 DVD mono track can be synced to the Criterion blu-ray with a +11595 ms delay.
