The Innocents (1961)

When I compared the audio tracks from the BFI and Criterion blu-rays years ago, I wrongly suggested that the latter was sourced from better elements. All the releases below very likely come from the same transfer and all but one have similar levels of noise reduction.

The anomaly is the first Capelight Pictures blu-ray released in Germany. Even though it's often extremely distorted, it is so much more detailed than the others that I prefer it.

The Innocents (1961)

Although the audio on the BFI blu-ray is less filtered and hissier, the audio on the newer Criterion blu-ray--sourced from a 35mm optical print--sounds considerably more detailed.

(Let this observation be proof that I don't deafly advocate hissier tracks if they don't actually sound better!)

Still, it could have sounded even better had a bit less noise reduction been applied.
