Both audio tracks on the 1990 LaserDisc are actually stereo, not mono. (I corrected its LDDB entry.)
Unfortunately, the LD is dull and murky, like the later editions.

How Green Was My Valley (1941)
The 5.1 mix is definitely a real (discrete) mix, and it's not terrible. Granted, the only thing actually separated to the surround channels is the music--which is certainly too loud at times--and the ambient water sounds in the mine scene at the end. But it is at least a discrete mix.
The mono mix also included on the Fox blu-ray sounds more balanced -- the music no longer overwhelms the dialogue or narration. It's also free of the recurrent damage affecting the music in the 5.1 mix.
