The mono mix, available only on the LaserDisc, is much ballsier, has significantly less annoying reverb, and sounds so much more immediate than the surround remix.
The remix sounds like it's been subjected to loads of noise reduction—or at least the dialogue has been, since the music presumably comes from the original stems and sounds quite out of place as a result. The remix just sounds incredibly weak, and it's missing quite a few effects (the moment when the cabin window shatters comes to mind, without comparing the two side-by-side right now). The hiss can be quite intense at times, but it’s the price that must be paid for the enormous bump in clarity that you get with the mono.
