The Graduate (1967)

The audio on the StudioCanal blu-ray is some (very phasey) duophonic BS derived from the mono mix. Dialogue, music, and sound effects ping pong between the left and right channels at random. Between the 5.1 and mono mixes on the Criterion blu-ray, I prefer the latter since the former uses alternate takes of S&G's music (different instrumentation, vocals, etc.). Also, it appears that the source elements for some tracks had gone missing at the time of the remixing, so these have been upmixed from the mono (and sound quite poor, consequently). I'm sure someone who cares more about the 5.1 mix could outline an extensive list of these anomalies/differences in takes, but I can't be bothered since the theatrical mono is just fine for me.

It's only the music that's been remixed into surround -- everything else remains mono.

  1. Shout redid this in 2019 and offered LPCM mono. Have you given that a listen?

    1. Sounds like Shout just licensed it from Criterion and it's the exact same disc:
