Sansho the Bailiff (1954)

1991 Daiei Video LaserDisc [PILD-7030]: Lovely sound. So much more high-frequency detail and bass than every other edition here. The source elements are lower generation than those used for Ugetsu.

1994 Criterion LaserDisc [CC1375L]: Extremely murky. In the past I would have thought this track was sourced from inferior elements, but there's clearly tonnes of noise reduction here and it could easily sound as bad as it does solely because of its mastering.

2005 Films sans Frontières DVD: Similar to the Criterion LaserDisc.

2007 Criterion DVD: Significantly more detailed than the Criterion LaserDisc, but still very muffled - heavy hiss and bass reduction.

2010 Masters of Cinema Blu-ray: Still a fair bit of hiss reduction (it was probably subjected to whatever Kadokawa applied when they prepared the old HD master), but it sounds clearer than the other DVDs/BDs. The MoC DVD from 2007 sounds the same.

2013 Criterion Blu-ray: Like the Criterion DVD.

2017 Kadokawa Blu-ray: Disappointing. It's better than the Criterion blu-ray and DVD, and does a much better job of reducing noise while preserving detail, but the end result is considerably murkier than the Masters of Cinema blu-ray and much murkier than the Daiei LD.

5/19/2022: Added the Criterion LaserDisc and Films san Frontières DVD
