The Omen (1976)

The 5.1 of this is bad. It's weak, garbled, and utterly underwhelming. It sounds the same on every release.

The mono is better, but prior to the recent Shout Factory blu-ray it was sourced from a higher-generation element that doesn't sound good -- still better than the 5.1, but rather dupey sounding. The old Fox LaserDisc is free of the destructive filtering on the Collector's Edition DVD, but similar overall. The Shout Factory mono is much more detailed and sounds superb, obligatory Shout-imparted clipping aside.

  1. Here's what I heard regarding the remix. According to Richard Donner in one of the commentaries, there was a 4.0 track made that went unreleased, and the remix was taken from those unused elements. Despite the intense filtering it actually does kinda resemble a 70s multi-track mix, but the mono still significantly outclasses it.
