The new blu-ray sounds similar to the DVD - slightly brighter, but still muffled. There's a version currently on BBC iPlayer that sounds much more detailed.
The iPlayer stream has two ~15 minute segments with some unfortunate background buzz, but both can easily be removed (i.e. it's not a justification for removing hiss/high-frequency detail). Interestingly, the scene 47 minutes in (blu-ray timecode) has different background sound effects in the DVD and blu-ray compared to the BBC version. The latter is missing a handful of car honks - 1, 2.
