The Godfather: Part II (1974)

1990 Paramount LaserDisc [LV 8459-2]: This is missing high-frequency detail throughout the entire film. It sounds very muffled. I suspect it's the same base transfer still being used for the blu-ray mono tracks.

2008 Paramount Blu-ray: For the most part a sizeable improvement over the 1990 LaserDisc. Most scenes (especially those with loud music) are substantially clearer. The level of hiss reduction varies from scene to scene, being more aggressive during quiet scenes with just dialogue, so segments do unfortunately sound murkier than they do on the LaserDisc track. Overall, I easily prefer it to the LD, but it really should sound better than it does.

2022 Paramount UHD Blu-ray: Same mastering as the 2008 blu-ray.

  1. how does its clarity compare to the 5.1 track?

is the 5.1 track just as muffled as the 5.1 track of the first or is it better or worse? (and yes I am familiar it adds a lot of new sound effects like the first does)

    1. I'd say the two are generally more similar here.
