To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)

19?? Image Entertainment LaserDisc [IDVL5123]: The best, least manipulated presentation of the film's original Dolby Stereo mix.

2016 Arrow Blu-ray: The 2.0 track is in fact the original mix, but it's been hit hard by noise reduction. Sounds in quiet scenes have been attenuated to the point of being frequently inaudible.

2023 Kino Lorber UHD Blu-ray: The 2.0 track is a downmix of the 5.1.

The 5.1 mix doesn't seem to use new effects (none that I noticed, anyway), but its fidelity is questionable. It has a fair bit of NR (though I think less than Arrow's 2.0 track), mostly affecting quiet scenes. Room ambience/environmental sound has been removed. The EQ of the music is at times baffling, particularly the final Wang Chung song at the end (Wait) which has its treble emphasised to pain-inducing levels. The Arrow and Kino Lorber 5.1 tracks have limiting across all channels, which isn't present on the DVD. Centre channel: 1, 2.

  1. from what I heard, the 5.1 track on the Kino release is an upmix of the stereo track and is not the same as the 5.1 track on the old release (one way to tell is the MGM roar in the opening, older releases were plastered and the Kino release is the original roar)
