The Lady from Shanghai (1947)

1991 Columbia Tri-Star HiFi VHS: Not particularly good, but the least poor of all these. It seems like there's some form of noise management above 7.5 kHz, though less than subsequent releases. It's likely the 1993 LaserDisc comes from the same transfer, but I haven't confirmed this.

As far as I can tell, the earlier VHS tape from 1985 only has a linear audio track, but the 1985 Betamax has a HiFi one. I'd like to hear it someday.

2000 R1 Columbia Tri-Star DVD: Strong noise reduction - very muffled.

2014 TCM Blu-ray (2nd pressing): Less noise reduction than the DVD, but marginally more than the VHS. Most of the film sounds similar to the 1991 VHS, though distorted passages have been scrubbed so clean they lose their impact (listen to the end of the clip). All the blu-rays use the same mastering from Sony, unsurprisingly.

2017 Indicator Blu-rayIdentical to the TCM blu-ray.

2018 Carlotta Films Blu-rayIdentical to the TCM blu-ray.

2020 Mill Creek Blu-ray - Rita Hayworth Ultimate Collection: Identical to the TCM blu-ray.
