Jaws (1975)

The granddaddy of bad 5.1 mixes.

Much has been written about it, but here’s a good run-down (with a video comparison): https://peelslowlynsee.wordpress.com/2010/02/25/jaws-before-and-after

It’s missing several effects and sounds far too delicate. It was supposedly improved between its first appearance on the DVDs and its most recent appearance on the blu-ray, but it still sucks, frankly. Fortunately, a DTS version of the original mono mix was included on the blu-ray, to the joy of many.

Unfortunately, the blu-ray DTS mono has been no-noised. The sound of splashing water has been dulled severely, the characters sound as if they speak from behind doors, and it's just not very involving.

But the LaserDisc mono track is one of the best sound mixes I've heard. (Yes, it's the same mix, but it sounds completely different, being devoid of any heavy-handed filtering).

  1. I personally prefer the mono track included on the 2005 DVD. It's pretty close to that of the BD mono but is a little crisper and not as 'flawed'. For a more detailed analysis check out this video! :)

  2. the problem with the LD mono is that during one portion towards the end one of the lines was accidentally dropped but was restored on the 2005 and 2012 mono mixes
