A Night to Remember (1958)

The old Criterion and Carlton DVDs from 1998 are very different. The Criterion, as you can read about elsewhere online, is slightly edited and seems to have been sourced (like the Criterion LD) from higher-generation sources. In terms of sound, the first Criterion DVD is easily the worst sounding version of this film--it sounds dupey and undetailed.

But the Carlton DVD sounds very good, and its audio track was recycled for ITV's later restoration from which the Criterion blu-ray comes. The Criterion blu-ray (and presumably the ITV blu-ray, which I haven't heard*) sounds just like the Carlton DVD, but with its high frequencies lopped off--it's better than the '98 Criterion DVD, but still pretty bad. The Carlton DVD is much less muffled and more detailed.

*This is a pretty educated guess; ITV's more recent restorations (like The Red Shoes and Brief Encounter) are pretty NRed sound-wise, but marginally less so than their Criterion blu-ray counterparts.

The Carlton DVD pictured here was synced to the Criterion blu-ray.
