City Lights (1931)

The Park Circus blu-ray from 2010 sounds the worst by far -- it doesn't have much noise reduction, but its high end has been EQed to be piercingly prominent. It's also pitched slightly too low for whatever reason.

The MK2 DVD from 2003 (both the R1 and R2 discs, which are pitched identically - PAL speed-up) is slightly better, but it's still very tinny and harsh.

The Image DVD from 2000 seems to be a flat 1:1 transfer without any sort of clean-up, EQ, or high-/low-frequency attenuation. For the most part, it sounds excellent. There are many loud pops here and there throughout, but the underlying detail sounds as it should. The bass is loud, but every other release cuts it and sounds worse for it.

The Criterion blu-ray sounds like the Image DVD, but with heavy hiss and bass reduction.

The Criterion blu-ray and the Image DVD sound much woollier and thicker than the Park Circus BD and the MK2 DVD, but it's evident that the latter two sound initially clearer only due to EQ; over time, they really make my ears bleed.

The Image DVD synced to the Criterion blu-ray:
