Their similarity suggests that Fox gave both an already scrubbed soundtrack to work with, although the typical "Clicks, thumps, hiss, and hum were manually removed using Pro Tools HD" line in the Criterion booklet indicates that Criterion did some filtering themselves.

Either way, the earlier DVD (2005) from Carlotta Films is one of those elusive discs that has no traces of sonic filtering at all. It sounds marvellous--crystal clear and immediate. Some minor clipping is present in two scenes (the disc is about 8 dB louder than the Criterion), amounting to about two and a half minutes' worth of mild distortion. No biggy.
