The Tartan DVD of this offers the biggest improvement in sound of any of the Bergman titles I've explored thus far.
The Criterion blu-rays both use the same audio track (the 2018 just being ~0.5 dB louder), which is derived from the track prepared in 2001 for the Criterion DVD.
The Tartan is basically perfect. It's remarkably clear and vibrant and devoid of distortion. The Criterion audio tracks sound totally different: they're dynamically compressed*, hiss-reduced, yet EQed in such a way that their noise floor is actually louder than that of the Tartan (the barely audible high-frequency hiss has become a lower, rain-like rustle). The Criterion tracks exhibit all the hallmarks of being a generation removed, but I'd be surprised if that were the case.
Next to the Tartan DVD they make the film sound like one from the '40s.
*A minor quibble -- the dynamic range of the Tartan is just enormous.
