Winter Light (1963)

The Criterion DVD and Tartan DVD sound the best, the Criterion blu-ray sounds the worst, and the StudioCanal blu-ray falls somewhere in between. All are certainly sourced from the same sound element.

The StudioCanal blu-ray clips pretty heavily, but its frequency range is intact. The Criterion DVD has its mids emphasised very slightly compared to the Tartan DVD and has some scene-specific attenuation of small sounds, but it's very similar to the Tartan overall and I would have been totally satisfied if the track had been carried over to the Criterion blu-ray.

Instead, the Criterion blu-ray has some moderate to heavy noise reduction applied, and dialogue now has a harsh, overly midsy quality.
