If you have the Criterion blu-ray, cycle between the 5.1 mix and the stereo mix. You'll probably notice that the 5.1 is less muffled than the stereo and so you'd logically conclude that the older mix just sounds that way due to the technological limitations of the time or something.
But the stereo mix on the old MGM DVD sounds much less rolled off and easily equals the 5.1 in terms of detail. It also lacks the aggressive, harsh EQ that mars the 5.1 mix (which is the only real objective thing I don't like about the remix).
This film was released in 1986; why on earth would anyone feel the need to do this to soundtracks that have so little high-frequency hiss in the first place?
can you possibly post a video comparison?
ReplyDeleteI don't see that much a difference in the wave-forms and the MGM DVD had no hiss whatsoever to begin with
Waveforms show volume, so naturally they'd be similar - I include them for completeness more than anything. You can see clearly the roll off in the first two and last two images.
DeleteVideo comparisons take time to make and according to Vimeo analytics, only one video I've uploaded has ever been watched the whole way through.
