The Criterion blu-ray and the old Columbia Tri-Star DVD mono tracks are similarly dull and muffled. The older Columbia Tri-Star LaserDisc is markedly clearer and has much more bass extension.
The 5.1 mix is pretty bad. It's been mixed from what sounds like a mono music track and the dialogue track, with the latter occasionally panning around to simulate directionality. It has a similar amount of noise reduction as the BD/DVD mono.
