Nashville (1975)

I had previously written that the Criterion blu-ray's 5.1 track is EQed differently than the Masters of Cinema blu-ray's 5.1 track, but revisiting this, I either made a mistake when preparing the files or was just completely wrong about them. All three blu-rays sound about the same, but the Masters of Cinema's front left channel is about 5.5 dB too loud relative to its front right channel. The DVD's LFE is neutered significantly.

There's definitely a fair (and equal) amount of hiss reduction on all of them, but they still sound generally okay and there's no better alternative - the 1982 Paramount LaserDisc has a mono track that is a lot less detailed and doesn't have any real merits.

  1. as far as I know mono wasn't the original mix to begin with which is why the 5.1 track doesn't sound that bad

my guess is that early laserdisc was either a downmix of the original 4-track audio or certain prints were in mono and the laserdisc spawned from it

  2. I'm not too surprised about the MoC being louder as most David M/Fidelity-in-Motion authored discs are usually mastered at a loud volume.
