The 1988 MGM LaserDisc's analogue track has little above 8 kHz and sounds a bit dull. Everything below sounds quite decent, so I believe its high end was removed rather than this being a consequence of the transfer coming from inferior elements.
The Warner DVD's dialogue is synced differently relative to its music/effects, and the music/effects are noticeably more detailed than they are in the LD, which suggests that a new mono mixdown was prepared. There's often more noise reduction on the dialogue compared to the LD. The blu-ray has the same track but EQed a bit more brightly.
I suppose the DVD/blu-ray sound better overall, but I'm disappointed by all three.
It's unlikely that the earliest VHS (c. 1988?) sounds different than the LD, but this is just a guess.
Why not take the music and effects from the DVD and combine the dialogue from the Laserdisc (if possible that is)?
