A Christmas Story (1983)

1999 R1 Warner DVD: Of these, this has the most natural sounding EQ, being less trebly, though the difference isn't huge. The opening few minutes have pitch instability (excerpt - 1, 2), which is somewhat audible during sustained notes of music. It gradually corrects itself and disappears ~8.5 minutes in.

2008 Warner Blu-ray: Like the Warner DVD, but with a slight treble boost.

2013 Warner Blu-ray: Identical to the first blu-ray; it's a lossy transcode.

2022 Warner UHD Blu-ray: Curiously, this seems to be a new mono mix - a new reduction of the original dialogue, music, and effects. There is selective noise reduction on the dialogue at times that does not affect the music, which could not have been achieved simply by NRing the original mono mixdown. The gasps/intakes of air between sentences in the narration have been removed. Before the (ADRed) line "Maybe they forgot" at 29:57, the sound of the packing straw being thrown is now audible, whereas it's absent from the original mix.

I do wonder if the 1993 LaserDisc shares the original DVD's initial pitch instability (if it's the same A/D transfer it probably will), but overall there's really not much difference between any of these and I don't imagine the film can sound significantly better.

  1. I can confirm the '93 laserdisc does not share the original DVD's initial pitch instability.
