Oh, god. What went wrong in the preparation of the 5.1 mixes? They sound like they've been submerged 100 ft underwater (!), with no dynamics of which to speak. They've been completely butchered and neutered, all the ferocity of the original mixes sucked away. Certainly in the running for the worst remixes I've ever heard.
The original stereo mixes (also on the German blu-ray set of the miniseries version) sound absolutely phenomenal, and are in the running for the best mixes I've ever heard. HUGE DIFFERENCE.

I hate to say it, but the 1997 directors cut 5.1 mix even with its replaced sounds is still better than the TV mini series 5.1.
