The 5.1 of this is an anomaly: it was done by the original sound team, which basically never happens. As such, it’s been constructed from the original elements and is DRASTICALLY different than the mono mix. There are tonnes of added/changed effects. Ambient sounds, in particular, are often completely different, and the mix is busier than the original mono, which is much sparser and more intimate.
A lossless version of the original mono mix is also included on the Lionsgate* blu-ray and it sounds wonderful – plenty of hiss and it’s crystal clear, sounding very similar to the relatively unfiltered mixes you’d find on most LDs. My personal preference: the mono (the effects for which seem better balanced, volume-wise), but the 5.1 is an interesting alternative.

Which Blu-ray are you referring to? The Studio Canal release, or the Lionsgate?
